As I stated earlier, we stayed first in Arenal, which is an area famous for the Arenal volcano. Arenal was a beautiful area. Not only that, there were a ton of activities that you could sign up for within about one hour of the mountain, such as horseback riding, ziplining, hot springs tours, rainforest canopy tours and more.

We chose first to go horseback riding to La Fortuna Falls, which was a visual spectacle unlike any I've seen. We traveled about one hour from our Arenal resort to the rainforest canopy, and from the drop off point, hiked about a half mile to the zipline platforms after we were suited up in our gear and had signed release forms.

From Arenal, we headed up the coast to Jaco. The overall feel there was also not as friendly and open as our previous stay at Arenal, so we only stayed for two days and moved on to another small hotel in a tiny surf community called Playa Hermosa. There were tons of beach areas to surf at too, if that's what you're into.

From Playa Hermosa, we moved on to Manuel Antonio. Manuel Antonio was, by far, the richest in up-close and personal encounters with wildlife, since it harbors a huge national park that is a haven for wildlife. Yes we actually had small white-faced monkeys steal our lunch, they are notorious for their kleptomania!

First, one of the most popular types of activities that visitors appreciate is a surfing trip. A person can still enjoy fishing by paying to join in on a fishing tour. One will be given a leader for the trip that can even provide very helpful fishing tips. A person can still enjoy fishing by paying to join in on a fishing tour. One may even catch a small shark or two while fishing out on the great Pacific ocean in Costa Rica.
Costa Rica is rich in biodiversity, with an abundance of wildlife on display in its numerous nature preserves and national parks. Costa Rica adventure tours are available virtually everywhere though in general there are two rules to consider.

Costa Rica Adventure Vacations

Firstly, it is generally safest to book Costa Rica adventure tours through the hotel you are staying at if they offer such a service because it helps to protect you should anything go wrong.

Arenal, Monte Verde, Jaco, Tamarindo and so on, as the more tourist-driven areas, are the places to head to for adventure!

Do some research before you head to Costa Rica and figure out what attractions and venues hold interest to you and plan your trip around visiting those spots.
Volcano Helicopter Tours - This is a fantastic night time activity for tourists. Your pilot/ tour guide will show you unimaginable aerial views and take you right next to the largest active volcanoes in Costa Rica. White Water Rafting - Costa Rica is famous for its white water rafting trips that run through the country's lush rainforests. Soak in Some Costa Rican History - If you are a history buff, or looking to educate yourself, you should head to the Plaza de la Cultura were you can find the National Theater and the Museum of Gold. Costa Rica's Famous Butterfly Farm - This may surprise you, but Costa Rica is South America's largest exporter of farm raised butterflies and home to numerous insect and bug museums.

Early the next morning, I chose to first visit the Tortuguero Rainforest in northeastern Costa Rica with a local tour company. We saw poisonous, red-eyed frogs up close, multi-color toucan birds, gorgeously vibrant flowers, and indigenous fruit. Well worth the stop! Finally, we arrived at Tortuguero Rainforest. It was a late evening arrival back in San Jose. Vegans do not despair! I enjoy spending my long weekend trips running around like the energizer bunny, soaking up as many sightseeing tours as I can!

Costa Rica is not the easiest place to find vegan cafes in the small villages. However, there ARE vegan-friendly dining establishments in town. San Jose has about a dozen or so vegan-friendly or vegetarian restaurants. Some examples are Comida Para Sentir, Nirvana, Mantras Veggie Cafe and Tea House (Costa Rican cuisine), and Soda Amitabha.

The next day, I hopped on another tour bus, this time for a private tour of the Monteverde Cloud Forest. Private tours, though a bit expensive are nice because you learn a lot about the people and the culture through your private tour guide. After the tour, we stopped at the rainforest's cafe for lunch. Vegans need not starve! Along the way, we stopped for beverages and snacks at an outdoor cafe. I purchased a cashew Britt snack, chocolate covered cashews. I purchased the typical touristy souvenirs of rainforest animal statues and indigenous peoples statutues. My final day was spent exploring the past and present at the local museums in San Jose. I joined a tour of San Jose's beautifully ornate National Theater.

As you can probably tell, Costa Rica adventure vacation was the trip of a lifetime - for me. I decided to take an extended weekend trip to Costa Rica. Time for sleep.
